This project aims to create an academic-level Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform that provides free and open access to high-quality education for learners around the world. The platform combines the flexibility of online learning with the academic standards of university teaching, making knowledge and expertise accessible to a broad and diverse audience. The initiative also supports the synergistic and complementary activities of the SEA-EU 2.0 “SEA-nergy” project, contributing to the development of innovative and inclusive educational opportunities within the European University Alliance.

The project is developed by the University of Gdańsk and brings together academic staff from various disciplines to design engaging, multimedia-rich online courses. Through a modern e-learning environment, learners can access educational content anytime and from anywhere, progressing at their own pace while benefiting from structured learning pathways and knowledge assessment activities.

The initiative is implemented as part of the project „Support for synergistic and complementary activities of the SEA-EU 2.0 – SEA-nergy project”, which is part of the NAWA programme „Support for European University alliances” from the European Funds for Social Development.

The programme aims to strengthen partnerships and the role of Polish universities within alliances operating under the Erasmus+ European Universities Initiative. The University of Gdańsk has received PLN 1,982,357.50 in funding to implement the project “Support for Synergistic and Complementary Activities of the SEA-EU 2.0 Project – SEA-nergy”.

The project’s website is implemented in WordPress, while all courses are delivered through the Moodle learning management system, ensuring a reliable, user-friendly, and scalable learning experience.

The main objective of the project is to increase access to academic knowledge through innovative online education and to support lifelong learning by offering high-quality MOOCs that are:

  • free of charge,
  • accessible worldwide,
  • available fully online,
  • designed according to academic standards,
  • supported by interactive learning materials and assessments,
  • flexible and adaptable to individual learning needs.

The project also contributes to the university’s third mission by sharing scientific knowledge and educational resources with society beyond the academic community.

The platform offers eight interdisciplinary MOOCs, covering a wide range of topics and perspectives. The courses address subjects such as European values, sustainable development, social challenges, innovation, and other contemporary issues relevant to today’s learners.

One of the project’s key strengths is the diversity of its courses. Each MOOC has been individually designed by its academic author, reflecting unique expertise, teaching approaches, and disciplinary perspectives. As a result, learners gain access to a rich and varied educational experience rather than a standardized set of materials.

The courses differ not only in subject matter but also in their pedagogical design, multimedia content, learning activities, and methods of knowledge assessment. This diversity ensures an engaging learning environment that caters to different interests, backgrounds, and learning preferences.

All courses have been created by academic teachers and researchers from the University of Gdańsk, ensuring a high level of scholarly quality, reliability, and educational value.

The course authors are specialists in their respective fields who combine academic expertise with practical teaching experience. Their involvement guarantees that the MOOCs are:

  • academically rigorous,
  • up-to-date and evidence-based,
  • aligned with university-level learning standards,
  • designed to support meaningful and effective learning outcomes.

The project is further supported by a team of educational and technical experts responsible for ensuring the quality of both the platform and the learning materials.

The platform is designed for a broad range of learners, including:

  • university students,
  • academic and administrative staff,
  • professionals seeking to develop new competencies,
  • lifelong learners,
  • members of the general public interested in university-level knowledge,
  • international learners looking for flexible educational opportunities.

No matter where participants are located, the courses provide an opportunity to learn from leading academics in a convenient and accessible format.

Participants can:

  • choose from a variety of interdisciplinary academic courses,
  • study anytime and anywhere,
  • learn at their own pace,
  • access multimedia-rich educational resources,
  • complete quizzes, tasks, and self-assessment activities,
  • monitor their learning progress,
  • develop new knowledge, skills, and competencies,
  • engage with topics of societal, European, and global importance.

The platform provides a flexible learning environment that removes many of the traditional barriers to participation in higher education.

The project strongly embraces the concept of Lifelong Learning, recognizing that education should be available throughout all stages of life. By providing open access to university-level courses, the platform supports continuous personal and professional development and encourages learners to expand their knowledge beyond formal education.

In the future, the platform will also serve as a space for courses developed by partners within the SEA-EU Alliance, fostering international collaboration and broader access to educational resources across Europe.

We believe that high-quality academic education should be available to everyone. Through this MOOC platform, we aim to create an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable learning environment that promotes knowledge sharing, academic excellence, and lifelong learning for all.
